Special preview for Dinh Q Le's solo show at MoMA tonight! Will be open to public starting tomorrow. MUST SEE!
I saw Dinh Q Le's solo show at MoMA last night and it's an interesting essay on collaboration, artist as curator, scavenger with a Beuysian ending in the form of social sculpture. I enjoyed meeting the artist for he runs an independent artist-run space called Sàn Art in Ho Chi Minh City.
I also met the amazing France Morin, an artworld adventurer curating the artist into the world. She told me that artists need to be making art in the world about archetypes, exhibiting in homes and take risks. Not necessarily in that order. She loves Jerry Saltz and explained the necessity to be generous! I dig that...

Arlington Show
I received an email from Maggie Michael today about the show she curated at the Arlington Arts Center where she was an Art Scout. For Art Scouts, six accomplished artists with strong presences in the DC metro region explain how and why they make their art—by presenting other artists who use the same materials or methods. I was honored that Maggie invited me to participate, I selected out 20 of my text-based work for the show. Maggie wrote:
I enjoyed, very much, installing Beyond Pavement and Windows, one by one, pair by pair, group by group to one momentous gestalt. Attached are photos from the opening. These are casual shots. I was going for action, a journalist's performance.
Artists included in Maggie's show: Dustin Carlson, Jason Hughes, Felicity Hogan, Michelle Grabner, Brad Killam, John Riepenhoff, Nicholas Frank, Ben Thelen, me, Austin Thomas and Jose Ruiz

Discovery: Lee Mullican
Last week at the Hirshhorn, I came across a beautiful painting by Lee Mullican, whom I had never heard of, a lovely painter.
On further research, looks like he had a show at the Grey Art Gallery in 2006. The sculptures are really intriguing.
The drawings are fantastic!
Mulling over Mullican tonight.

Another Image
Here's Matthew's Image, from our One Image, One Minute fundraisier for Camp Pocket U., and appropriately he read from the Book of Matthew:
"The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27"The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
28" 'An enemy did this,' he replied.
"The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?'
29" 'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.' "

One Image, One Minute part 1
This is part one post of One Image, One Minute: Significant People, Present Significant images, a benefit for Norte Maar's Camp Pocket U.
Of Mere Being
The palm at the end of the mind,
Beyond the last thought, rises
In the bronze distance.
A gold-feathered bird
Sings in the palm, without human meaning,
Without human feeling, a foreign song.
You know then that it is not the reason
That makes us happy or unhappy.
The bird sings. Its feathers shine.
The palm stands on the edge of space.
The wind moves slowly in the branches.
The bird’s fire-fangled feathers dangle down.
~Wallace Stevens, 1954~
The above image, which Roger Hodge presented last night, is an untitled photograph (an industrial scar) by J. Henry Fair, taken from an airplane over the Gulf of Mexico last week.
Roger read "Of Mere Being," by Wallace Stevens to accompany the image:Of Mere Being

TO VA VIA BUS
Riding the bus, a double decker, that feels like a boat. Headed to the Arlington Arts Center for a show curated by Maggie Michael.
Sailing down 95, surfing the web, finding things to distract me from the sway of this bus, including prayer art objets made by Jennifer Hilltout that make me think of Abigail Doan, Rossana Martinez's Sketchbooks reminds me to draw, checking in with Hauser&Wirth is fun looking and reading the SVA Continuing Education blog is probably as close as I need to get to Bravo's Work of Art.
We're at a rest stop, sway has stopped, who's idea was it to take this double-decker boat ride to DC anyway? Life raft, please.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN -- ChoreOBJECTography is a dance performance series debuting this summer as a platform to provide young voices the opportunity to create and present work. The second installment in this three part series will take place Saturday, June 19th with seven original works created by the participating artists: Desira Barnes, Margot Bassett, Tess Dworman, Heather Favretto, Sydnie Mosley, Sarah Zitnay and Sam
Hough/Keeley Walsh. For questions: choreobjectography@gmail.com
East artist was assigned an identical set of objects to inform and inspire their creative process. The performance unveils the varied ways the choreographers have engaged the items. The evening is structured as a social gathering with performances intermixed on the expansive rooftop of a warehouse in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The views of Manhattan as well as the unique work, that for many of these artists is their New York premiere, is not to be missed.
This performance series was produced by: Benn Rasmussen, Anna Adams Stark, Raja Kelly and Jessica Chen and in collaboration with Norte Maar

Enter Jimbo
Now that I'm experimenting with sculpture, my walls are empty. Enter Jimbo Blachly, who has covered my walls with his secret painting practice. My secret wooden model making meets his moody abstractions. It's definitely a fun room to enter, if you know the secret code.

A Gaggle of girls, not really, more like a power house of peeps!
The other night I hung out with Dorothy Robinson, Hildur Asgeirsdóttir Jónsson, Ellie Murphy, Ellen Letcher, and Abigail Doan. Combined, this group makes an interesting exhibition, definitely a defiant salon night. Abigail posted images on her blog and I'm including more below, mixing it up, organizing an installation, creating relationships.

Leaving Ohioland
Back in the bubble that's what, "regional" curators, artists and gallerists, call the New York art scene. I loved being enlightened about this regional versus bubble-minded way of working. So back here, I'm still blown-away by Hildur's work.
More shots from Ohio and some taken last night in Bushwick. Tomorrow is my first day of work as the new Executive Director of Norte Maar!

New Discoveries
Reporting from the Cleveland/Akron area and I must say it is awesome here. I went to the Akron Art Museum and received a walk-through by Arnie Tunstall, artist and the museum's registrar.
The building is amazing!
While walking through the museum I made a few discoveries, including
Nassos Daphnis, born in 1914 and La Wilson, a local Akron artist.
I've also met a few Cleveland artists, including Douglas Utter, who I invited to present at 1 image, 1 minute, so hopefully we will hear from him again soon!
Finally, getting to know Kevin Jerome Everson.
