Street Donut

I attended a beautiful bris this morning.  I don't go to too many of those, but at this one, the cantor said something that gave me pause.  He said that when there's a tragedy we are all quick to leave, catching the first plane or train outta here!  But when there's a celebration, we can't go, we have to stay at work and we miss the party.  He highly recommended that we reverse the two and celebrate life, attend, go and stay.

Below, I'm experimenting with a link from Amazon, for a young composer I met later in the day.  He just came out with a new recording of piano music.  Liz Atz did the cover art.  Listen, eat a donut and celebrate life.

Visual AIDS

my projected sketchbook, dancers, Audra's sound

I finally returned the slide projector I borrowed from Visual AIDS. I walked the projector back to them in lieu of going to the gym! Working it-pictured above is a shot of my projected images from the dance (photo credit: Audra Wolowiec).

Visual AIDS just hosted their annual VAVA VOOM night honoring Geoffrey Hendricks, Brent Sikkema and Richard Renaldi. Please check out their blog and participate! Their Postcards from the Edge is a great way for all artists and collectors alike to get and make some art!!

Thanks so much for your time, and keep up with your art!

Starting this weekend, artists take to the storefronts of Bay Ridge for the second annual 5th Ave Storefront Art Walk (aptly abbreviated as SAW). Pictured above Audra Wolowiec's text message at Bay Ridge's Hot Yoga! A few more artist-friends are participating, in addition to Audra, including Julie Torres, Lars Kremer, and Paul D'Agostino.

SAW's goal is to support and promote emerging Brooklyn artists while celebrating local Bay Ridge businesses and to broadly explore the interstices between commerce, art and community. The event will run May 16th through June 13th. Walk with the artists and mingle with them afterwards on May 21 starting at 4pm. For more information click here and here to download a map of the area and full list of participating artists. See you out there?

Monday Making Moving into Tuesday Evening

Monday afternoon now, greets me with a bouquet of inspiration selected from an "image" search of James Siena.

Painting Now, a show up at a temporary space of Harris Lieberman Gallery is also an inspiration source, but you really have to be in front of these beauties. After looking there, move onto Gagosian for a good look at Picasso and Marie-Thérèse.

Then (for me alone without any looking) it's off to Williamsburg for the community board meeting. Bring it on, I'm ready for the Presentation of artwork for Humboldt Plaza, for which I have 5 minutes! After that I'll need a new search...for beauty.

A 24-Hour Cycle of Painting

Here is Julie Torres during her 24-hour painting cycle. The resulting wall of finished paintings reveal some real gems. She described this process as "just one day of my life" and that this was "joy."

Camping out in the offices of Hyperallergic, Julie started painting at midnight Saturday night and kept on working until midnight the following day. I paid her visit at noon on Sunday, bringing coffee and croissant. I got the first look (and first dips since she GAVE away her work) at a certain serialism where joy of color, brushstrokes, and form made up minutes and then 8 hours and finally a whole day.
