I love this artist

I can buy his art for $30. I can read his explanations of what is art. And I can listen to him read to me on his Radio Philistine.

I love Paul Chan!

Medieval Art

I have to post this quickly. I am in Ohio with family.

Before leaving NY, I had the great fortune of viewing a rare exhibition titled Medieval Art and the Contemporary Spirit. After running into Roberta Smith she also told me to go see the Bruce Davidson exhibition at Howard Greenberg. The show is a recreation of a 1970 Museum of Modern Art exhibit titled East 100th Street. Both shows are must sees. Now to see to the dishes.

My needle is stuck on Robert Frank and I skip to Marina Rosenfeld

Above is a picture of a speaking chair from last night's performance of Marina Rosenfeld's "P.A.," part of Performa. “P.A.” used the massive airspace and complex social function of the Armory drill hall as both a reflecting and distorting structure (that sentence is from the press materials).

I can listen to more Rosenfeld on my favorite listening portal Last.FM. Her latest album is available for purchase. While my ears open and mind fills, I can feast my eyes on current obsession Robert Frank.

Going the Distance

Contemporary Art is about going the distance required to find something powerful, mind-bending (boggling) and transformative. Last Friday, I travelled to the studios Mira Schor and Loren Munk. Below are images from both, thanks for looking and traveling with me.

Some of Mira's Books. Schor is the author of Wet: On Painting, Feminism, and Art Culture and co-editor of M/E/A/N/I/N/G: An Anthology of Artists’ Writings, Theory, and Criticism (both from Duke University Press). She has contributed to the Brooklyn Rail.

Schor has two new books, The Extreme of the Middle: Writings of Jack Tworkov, which she has edited, from Yale University Press, and a new collection of her own writings on art and culture, A Decade of Negative Thinking: Essays on Art, Politics, and Daily Life, to be published by Duke University Press.

Next stop: Loren Munk. Loren also writes for the Brooklyn Rail and is well know for his video dispatches from the artworld. He paints under the name Loren Munk and writes under the name James Kalm. He's a complete package of viewing.

ABOUT THE EFA STUDIO PROGRAM
Founded in 1998 as a program of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, The EFA Studios Program was created to provide affordable studio space within a community of artists, facilitate career development, and promote public and critical exposure for our members. The EFA Studios Program is housed in eight floors of the EFA building located in Midtown Manhattan's Fashion District. The Studios Program maintains 80 artists studios of various size and shape for up to 80 member-artists. Members are selected by a jury of respected arts professionals through a competitive application process. One of three programs at EFA, the members of the EFA Studios program are part of a community that includes EFA Project Space and the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. The Studio Program provides artists the rare opportunity to work in a professional arts community inside Manhattan and in close proximity to the city's primary gallery districts. Unique among studio programs in New York City, EFA is one of the few remaining arts organizations still providing long-term workspace in Manhattan.
